Castries’ central square honours Nobel Prize-winning poet Derek Walcott and is shaded by a samaan tree said to be over 400 years old. On its east side stands the Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, completed in 1897, whose interior is painted with vivid murals by Saint Lucian artist Sir Dunstan St Omer.
The square is a calm place to sit between the market and the waterfront, and the surrounding streets have Victorian-style buildings, the library and small cafés.
