Grande Anse on the north-east coast is one of the Caribbean’s important leatherback nesting beaches. During the season (roughly March to August) community guides lead overnight or late-evening turtle watches, with strict rules on lights and distance. The beach itself is wild and not safe for swimming because of currents, but the drive through the Des Barras area and the sense of remoteness are part of the appeal.
Book through a licensed operator or the Des Barras community group; take warm layers, insect repellent and red-filtered torches.
